It was winter, and there was a tree at a pull over on the side of the road during a long drive up I15 in Montana. There was snow on the ground and I had pulled over to stretch my legs, I came across this tree and was amazed by the intricacy of the roots. I had never seen a tree so far above the ground with its roots exposed to the world like that. I took a picture and began drawing first thing when I got back home.
